Thanks to the foresight and commitment of UVA Community Credit Union’s President/CEO Alison DeTuncq, our community is a better place to live and work. During DeTuncq’s tenure at the Credit Union, she has made an immeasurable impact on our community.
For over 10 years, the Credit Union has provided free tax preparation services in conjunction with the Tax Aid Coalition for low to moderate income families. Through the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, the Credit Union helps eligible families claim tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit – the federal government’s most effective antipoverty program for working households.
Just to give you an idea of how large this program is, 828 federal returns were completed in 2021, providing a local economic impact of over $1.6 million for our community.
In addition to annually training and certifying about 35 team members to help prepare and file tax returns, the Credit Union dedicates significant staff time throughout the year to publicize the program, disseminate and collect documents, screen and schedule appointments, and ensure the program is fully resourced.
Credit Union Senior Vice President Janine Williams says none of this would have been possible without the vision and steadfast commitment of Alison DeTuncq, who will retire in May 2022 after 23 years as President/CEO.
DeTuncq’s legacy also includes the Credit Union’s award-winning, comprehensive financial literacy program and scholarship program. This is the sixteenth year the credit union has offered scholarships to high school seniors, contributing more than $310,000 towards higher education.
For her role in the transformation and success of the UVA Community Credit Union, along with her active service in the Credit Union movement and as a local civic leader, DeTuncq was recently awarded the James P. Kirsch Lifetime Achievement Award, the Virginia credit union system’s highest honor.
The Charlottesville Regional Chamber of Commerce commends and thanks Alison DeTuncq for her many contributions to our community, including several years as a member of our very own Board of Directors.
