Launching into the New Year!

A Black Brant IX sounding rocket is scheduled to launch Tuesday, Jan. 4, carrying an experiment to study the origin of soft X-rays in our galaxy that impact technology in Earth’s atmosphere.

While not harmful to us on the surface, these X-rays can disrupt radio communications and accuracy of GPS systems. Soft X-rays have lower energy as compared to hard X-rays, which are used in imaging for medical applications.

For those in the mid-Atlantic region, weather permitting, you may catch a glimpse of the rocket. The window opens Jan. 4 at 10 p.m. EDT and runs until 2 a.m. Jan. 5. Learn more: https://go.nasa.gov/3mGKIBk
