Cassie Callis and Elsa Spoor began their participation in the women’s heptathlon for the Virginia track and field program at the Duke Invitational on April 8. The event is taking place at Morris Williams Track & Field Stadium in Durham, North Carolina.
The opening day of the heptathlon saw Callis finish with 3,119 points, while Spoor accumulated 3,059 points. Both athletes competed in four events: the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, and 200 meters.
Callis placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.28 seconds (season best), twelfth in high jump with a mark of 1.57 meters (5-1.75), seventh in shot put reaching 11.31 meters (37-1.25), and seventh again in the 200 meters with a time of 25.26 seconds (+1.4 wind).
Spoor recorded a personal record of 15.06 seconds (+1.7 wind) to finish seventeenth in the hurdles and took second place in high jump by clearing 1.69 meters (5-6.50). She finished sixteenth in shot put with a throw of 10.22 meters (33-6.50) and set another personal record by running the 200 meters in 25.53 seconds (+0.7 wind) for eleventh place.
The Duke Invitational continues on April 9 as both athletes will compete on day two of the heptathlon, which includes long jump, javelin throw, and an 800-meter run.
