The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams began competition at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, New Jersey on May 1, with Jeremiah Nubbe and Charlotta Sandkulla each winning their respective hammer throw events for the second consecutive weekend.

The event marked another strong showing for the Cavaliers in throwing disciplines. Cale Ayers achieved a personal best of 64.93 meters to finish third in the men’s hammer throw, improving his standing as seventh all-time in Virginia program history. On the women’s side, Theresa Breckley set a new personal record with a throw of 55.35 meters to secure ninth place and move into tenth on Virginia’s all-time list.

Charlotta Sandkulla secured victory in the women’s hammer throw with her final round effort of 66.78 meters. Teammate Aixa Corbacho finished fourth after recording a mark of 58.37 meters on her last attempt. In men’s competition, Jeremiah Nubbe won with his sixth-round mark of 73.59 meters, narrowly missing his personal best and maintaining his position as second all-time at Virginia.

This is the second straight weekend that Nubbe and Sandkulla have swept both men’s and women’s weight throws for Virginia; they also won their events at the Penn Relays one week earlier. Freshman Alex Jackson participated in his first collegiate hammer throw competition, finishing tenth with a distance of 46.97 meters.

In other field results, Christiana Ellina placed second in the women’s javelin with an opening round mark of 48.61 meters.

The Cavaliers are scheduled to continue competing at Weaver Stadium on Saturday, May 2, while additional team members will participate at Hill City Twilight held at Shellenberger Field & Dr. Jack M. Toms Track in Lynchburg.
