Virginia swimming & diving had eight swimmers compete in the finals at the Phillips 66 International Team Trials on Wednesday night in Greensboro, N.C.
Junior Kate Douglass led the Cavaliers with a second-place finish in the 200-meter breaststroke. She finished in a personal-best time of 2:21.43, just .24 seconds off first. First place automatically qualifies for the 2022 FINA World Championships in Budapest. Second place finishers will qualify based on roster availability at the end of the trials.
Douglass was joined by sophomore Anna Keating and junior Ella Nelson in the A Final of the 200 breast. Keating finished fourth in a personal-best time of 2:24.62, nearly two seconds faster than her previous best, and Nelson was seventh in 2:29.07.
Sophomore Alex Walsh finished sixth in the 200-meter freestyle A Final with a time of 1:57.82, improving her personal-best by three seconds. UVA alum Paige Madden was seventh in the B Final of the 200 free with a time of 2:00.57.
Freshman Reilly Tiltmann took fifth in the 200-meter backstroke with a personal-best time of 2:10.16, dropping two seconds off her previous best.
Freshman Jack Aikins was third in the men’s 200-meter backstroke, finishing in a personal-best time of 1:56.29. His previous best time was a 1:57.50 at the US Olympic Trials in 2021.
Freshman Gretchen Walsh rounded out the night with a fourth-place finish in the 50-meter butterfly. Walsh swam a personal-best 25.97, dropping almost a second off her previous best time.
On Tuesday night, sophomore Abby Harter finished fifth in the B Final of the 200-meter butterfly with a personal-best time of 2:11.01.
Douglass placed fifth in the A Final of the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 53.99.
Incoming freshman Sebastien Sergile finished eighth in the C Final for U18 competitors.
