Virginia men’s squash sophomore Juan Jose Torres Lara was named Men’s Player of the Year by the Mid-Atlantic Squash Conference, according to an announcement made on March 31. He shares this honor with Wenqing Tang from Navy.
The award recognizes outstanding performance in collegiate squash and highlights Torres Lara’s contributions to his team during the season. It marks him as the fourth player from Virginia’s men’s squash program to receive this distinction, following Omar El Torkey, Aly Hussein, and Karim Elbarbary.
Torres Lara achieved a 13-2 record for the season while primarily playing at position two. He started with nine consecutive wins, including seven victories over Ivy League opponents. His efforts continued through Virginia’s run in the MASC Championship where he secured three wins. Additionally, he recorded a straight-set victory against No. 5 Yale during the College Squash Association Team Championships quarterfinals.
His performance helped Virginia finish within the top eight of final collegiate rankings for a sixth consecutive year.
The recognition reflects both individual excellence and ongoing success for Virginia men’s squash.
