Virginia swimming and diving head coach Todd DeSorbo announced on May 19 the hiring of Reed Fujan as an associate head coach.

The appointment brings a new leader to the program, with Fujan bringing experience from several collegiate teams. His background is expected to support the continued growth and success of Virginia’s swimming and diving athletes.

Fujan previously served as an associate head coach at Louisville for three years, following a similar role at Alabama for another three years. During his time at Louisville, he helped the Cardinals earn 49 All-America honors. The women’s team was runner-up in the Atlantic Coast Conference in his first season, their best finish in seven years, and finished in the top eight at NCAA championships each year during his tenure. The men’s team also placed among the top fifteen nationally.

At Alabama, Fujan contributed to historic results for both men’s and women’s teams. He helped guide the Crimson Tide women to their highest finish ever at NCAA Championships in 2022 by taking fourth place with a school-record points total. The men and women combined earned 20 medals at the Southeastern Conference Championships that year, including ten golds. In his first season with Alabama, Fujan was part of a staff that saw student-athletes qualify for multiple national events and set numerous records over five days of competition.

Before joining Alabama, Fujan worked as a volunteer assistant at Indiana University when its team won its second consecutive Big Ten Championship and finished third nationally. He later served as head coach of St. John’s University swimming and diving during the 2018-19 season.

Fujan competed collegiately for Notre Dame where he was co-captain his senior year, earned Academic All-ACC honors twice, became a three-time All-American swimmer, set one of school’s fastest times in history for an event, received most improved recognition and other awards during his undergraduate career.

DeSorbo said: “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Reed Fujan to our program. Reed has built an outstanding reputation at Louisville as both a coach and a recruiter, and his passion for developing elite swimmers is exactly what we look for on our staff. He shares the same values and commitment to excellence that have helped us build this program into what it is today. Our student-athletes are going to benefit tremendously from his experience, and I think he’s going to fit in seamlessly with our culture here at Virginia. We can’t wait to get to work.”

Fujan said: “I want to thank Todd DeSorbo and the staff for the opportunity to be part of one of the best programs in the world. From the outside, it’s clear this team knows how to work hard and have fun, and that balance seems to be a big part of their success. I’m excited to get to Charlottesville and get to work. Go Hoos!”

With these changes underway within Virginia’s coaching staff, observers will watch how these experiences shape future results.
