Smith Aquatic & Fitness Center located at 1000-A Cherry Avenue will reopen to the public on Tuesday, May 31.  Smith AFC has been closed since May 2020 for updates to improve the facility’s ventilation and air distribution system.

Smith AFC features a host of aquatic amenities such as a six lane indoor lap/competitive pool, a leisure pool with zero-depth entry, two water slides, an in-water play structure, lazy river, diving board a wet classroom and a variety of learn to swim classes and programs.  In addition to the aquatic amenities, Smith AFC also features a fitness room with cardiovascular machines, strength training equipment, a stretching area and limited free weights.  A fitness studio is also located within the facility, which has a variety of classes and programs such as yoga, Zumba, aerobics, Pilates, strength and resistance.  Other Smith AFC amenities include locker rooms, family changing rooms, parking, Wi-Fi and an observation deck overlooking the natatorium.

Hours of operation for Smith AFC are:

  • Tuesday May 31st – June 2nd   7am-8pm
  • Friday June 3rd  7am-7pm
  • Closed Saturday and Sunday June 4th and 5th
  • Open daily beginning Monday June 6th

Note: The lap pool will be fully open each day; however, the recreation pool will open at 4:30pm daily

In addition to the facility reopening, Charlottesville Parks & Recreation is offering new Fitness and Wellness pass options.  The new pass offers flexibility and affordability for customers to have access to a single facility, Carver Recreation Center or Smith Aquatic & Fitness Center, or access to both facilities.  

Customers who purchase a Fitness and Wellness pass will have access to the amenities at the facility or facilities that they have chosen for the duration of the pass.  This new structure allows customers to purchase a pass based on what their fitness and wellness goals and needs are.  Fitness and Wellness passes are also eligible for the Parks & Recreation scholarship that provides discounts for individuals or families in need financial assistance.  Additionally, outdoor pool passes will be valid at Smith AFC for this summer.
