Germanna Community College issued the following announcement on July 9
In observance of Juneteenth, the Fredericksburg Nationals and Germanna Community College honored the five recipients of the 2021 Jackie RobinsonEssay Contest Scholarships prior to Saturday evening’s game at FredNats Park.
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of slaves in the United States. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, slaves were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.
In the essays, students explain how one of the nine values that helped Robinson have the courage to succeed as he broke Major League Baseball’s color line in 1947 has helped them. They are: Courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, citizenship, justice, commitment, and excellence.
This year’s Jackie Robinson Essay Contest Scholarship Contest winners are Luke Dufiho, Calvin Richard, Barry Barker, Lauren Mostowy, and Carmen Vivalva.
The winners also will be presented pregame by Dr. Janet Gullickson, president of Germanna. The five winners are being awarded $1,042 scholarships to GCC from the FredNats to honor the legacy of Jackie Robinson.
“I could really relate to Jackie Robinson‘s principles,” said the 18-year-old Mostowy, who, graduated from Stafford High School this month and will attend Germanna in the fall, planning a career as an athletic trainer. “I use those principles in my everyday life to work toward success.”
