PVCC TJACE Instructor Debra Tuler Wins 2022 Virginia Association for Adult and Continued Education Teacher of the Year Award

Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is proud to announce Thomas Jefferson Adult and Career Education (TJACE) instructor Debra Tuler as the 2022 Joan E.D. Kushnir Teacher of the Year. The Virginia Association for Adult and Continuing Education (VAACE) selects one individual annually for this prestigious award. The VAACE is an association of adult education practitioners, including city and county adult programs, extension services, government, industry, health service, higher education and non-profit organizations.

“As an educator, Debbie exemplifies the dedication, passion and heart that contribute to successful students and vibrant communities. She recognizes the strengths of all her students; she inspires them to see the possibilities and to realize their potential. PVCC colleagues join the VAACE in celebrating and recognizing Debbie for her contributions and impact,” stated PVCC President Jean Runyon.

Tuler has been a valued contributor in the adult education field, with 25 years of service that includes being an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher, Festival of Cultures co-coordinator and ESL program coordinator. She joined TJACE@PVCC in 2017 and currently serves as an ESL teacher and National External Diploma Program (NEDP) coordinator. Tuler’s career also includes many years of adult education experience with Charlottesville City Schools.

“Debbie’s commitment to serving English language learners is extraordinary,” expressed TJACE Director Carol Coffey. “She leads our team of 12 ESL teachers to deliver quality instruction to over 400 ESL students each year. Thanks to Debbie, thousands of local refugees and immigrants have learned the English language skills required to become active community members, productive workers and engaged parents. Debbie has also helped over 40 students earn nurse aide credentials through our integrated education and training programs.” As a state-wide leader, Tuler has designed professional development programs and served on curriculum design teams and professional association boards.

TJACE @PVCC helps adults earn high school diplomas or a GED®;  helps speakers of other languages improve English language skills; and prepares adult learners for their next career steps through integrated education and training. To learn more about TJACE visit www.pvcc.edu/tjace.
