The Laurels of Charlottesville was one of Albemarle County’s two second largest nursing homes in the first quarter of 2026, based on data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The facility shared this position with Albemarle Health & Rehabilitation Center.

Records indicate The Laurels of Charlottesville offered 120 beds—32 more than Albemarle County’s average in the same quarter—and served an average of 107.2 residents at that time.

The CMS assigned The Laurels of Charlottesville an overall rating of 2 out of 5, which is lower than the Virginia nursing homes’ average rating of 3.

For the quarter, Monroe Health & Rehab Center was the largest nursing home in Albemarle County with 180 available beds.

By the end of the first quarter of 2026, The Laurels of Charlottesville had incurred $8,824 in one fine and received one penalty.

There were five for-profit nursing home facilities in Albemarle County, Virginia, during the first quarter of 2026.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the nation’s older adult population remains on the rise as younger age groups trend downward. From 2020 to 2024, Americans age 65 and above grew by 13%, while the number of people under 18 decreased by 1.7%. The older adult segment has surged since 1920, growing from 4.9 million a century ago to over 61 million by 2024.

Findings from a 2021 study indicate that nearly half of Americans age 65 and older—about 28 million—could require long-term services or support. More than one-third of this demographic may ultimately need care in a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
