The University of Virginia honored its senior softball class on April 27, celebrating five players who have contributed to the most successful run in program history. The group, known as the Faithful Five and all hailing from Virginia, includes Kelsey Hackett, Courtney Layne, Kassidy Hudson, Eden Bigham, and Jade Hylton.
Their coach Joanna Hardin said their decision to stay in-state and play together has been a key factor in the Cavaliers’ recent success. “They just elevated the program the moment they walked on Grounds, so I’m super indebted to them,” Hardin said. “I’m very grateful for their belief in the vision of what UVA softball could be… It takes a class, a few people in a class, to really take a risk. I know there were a lot of questions as to why they would do that when they were going through the recruiting process. But this is why they decided to come here, because they wanted to do what they did.”
The seniors have led Virginia to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances and helped set new records for wins over their four years with season finishes of 30-22 in 2023, 34-20 in 2024 and currently standing at 36-12 with one regular-season game remaining. Hylton said she and her classmates expected this level of impact: “We knew each other… so I think we knew the potential we had and knew the impact that we could give this program.” Their roles varied over time but all five have become key contributors.
Senior Day festivities followed Virginia’s sweep over NC State at Palmer Park where each senior played significant roles during Sunday’s game—a fact noted by both teammates and coaches alike. Sophomore Alex Call said: “You always want to send your seniors out with a special win…we were just so happy to have them with us and so grateful for everything that they’ve done for this program.” Hylton marked Senior Day by hitting a home run on her first at-bat.
Hardin praised Bigham and Hylton for setting high standards early on while commending Hackett, Layne and Hudson for earning every opportunity through persistence: “At a time in college athletics where it’s easy to look around and think…you five chose something harder. You chose to stay and build…and that’s why this program is different because you were here.” She concluded her tribute by reminding them: “We’re not done yet…We still have more to chase, more to accomplish.”
Looking ahead, Virginia will host the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament at Palmer Park from May 6 through May 9—the first time hosting such an event—with hopes high among players like Hylton who said: “It’s just a joy…and I’m really excited looking forward to it.”
