The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams finished competition at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, New Jersey, and the Hill City Twilight in Lynchburg, Virginia, on May 2. The Cavaliers recorded a total of 14 personal and season-best performances across both events.
These results highlight strong individual showings as athletes prepare for upcoming meets. Performances included top finishes in various events and several entries into the program’s all-time performance lists.
At the Larry Ellis Invitational, Janae Profit placed second in the women’s discus throw with a mark of 53.73 meters on her final attempt. Freshman Alex Jackson set a personal best of 17.41 meters in the shot put to place fourth; this result ranks ninth-best in program history, eighth in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) this season, and fifth among freshmen historically at Virginia. Brooke Lumpkin took third place in shot put at 16.29 meters while Profit followed closely behind at fourth with a mark of 16.20 meters.
During the Hill City Twilight meet, Katie Payne won the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best time of 10:30.27—placing her tenth on Virginia’s all-time list and second among freshmen historically for that event. In other notable results, Maya Rollins captured first place in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 13.32 seconds—a mark that is sixth-fastest this ACC season—and improved her own third-place standing on Virginia’s all-time list.
Gary Martin won the men’s 1500 meters with a time of 3:34.12—ranking him fourth nationally this year—while Justin Wachtel finished fifth overall but set his own personal best (3:40.34), now tenth all-time for Virginia runners.
Looking ahead, team officials said that “the Cavaliers will travel to Durham, N.C., to compete at the Duke Twilight on Sunday (May 3) before making the trip back to Lynchburg to compete at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier on Wednesday (May 6).”
