The NCAA women’s golf selection committee announced on April 29 that the University of Virginia will be the No. 6 seed at the Chapel Hill Regional, which will take place at the UNC Finley Golf Course from May 11 to May 13.
This marks Virginia’s twentieth appearance in an NCAA Regional Championship in its twenty-two competitive seasons since the program began in 2004. The only exception was in 2020, when the championship was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Chapel Hill Regional is one of six sites that will determine which teams advance to the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship. Each regional includes twelve teams and six individual players who are not part of those teams. The five lowest-scoring teams from each regional, along with one individual not on those advancing teams, will move on to compete in the finals set for May 22 through May 27 at Omni LaCosta Resort in Carlsbad, California.
At Chapel Hill, Virginia joins a field that includes Texas, North Carolina, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Kent State, Michigan State, NC State, High Point, Furman, Richmond and Howard. Tiebreakers and playoffs will be used if necessary to determine advancement.
Regional competitions are also scheduled for Ann Arbor (hosted by Michigan), Simpsonville (Louisville), Stanford (Stanford), Tallahassee (Florida State) and Waco (Baylor). Each site features a lineup of twelve qualifying schools and six individuals vying for a spot at nationals.
The announcement confirms another opportunity for Virginia’s women’s golf team to compete among top programs nationally as they seek qualification for this year’s championship event.
