Cost of college went up for all students at the University of Virginia-Main Campus

In-state tuition and fees rose 4.7 percent for 2018-19 at the University of Virginia-Main Campus, according to recent data from the U.S. Department of Education.

Virginia residents paid $17,653 to attend the four-year public institution this year – $800 more than the $16,853 charged for 2017-18.

Non-residents paid 177.8 percent more than residents this year, or $49,032. Their price tag grew 3.7 percent from $47,273 in 2017-18.

About 64 percent of the school's undergraduate population are Virginia residents. About 31 percent are residents of other states and 4 percent are citizens of other countries.

Data shows 59 percent of full-time undergraduates who started school in 2015-16 received student financial aid in some form. In all, 1,405 students received grants or scholarships totaling $30.7 million and 1,112 students took out student loans totaling more than $8.3 million.

Including all undergraduates (24,639), 7,186 students used grants or scholarships totaling $138.1 million, and 4,249 students took out $26 million in federal student loans.
