Piedmont Virginia Community College issued the following announcement on Oct. 28
Piedmont Virginia Community College is excited to honor its Thomas Jefferson Adult Career Education (TJACE) division General Education Development (GED®) graduates, Friday, October 29 at 7 p.m., with a graduation ceremony. The ceremony will feature adult learners who have earned their GED® or Adult High School Diploma in the last year and celebrate their accomplishments. The graduation will be held on the PVCC main campus, at 501 College Drive in Charlottesville, VA. Twenty-nine students have earned their diplomas in the last two years.
“TJACE @PVCC is committed to helping adults achieve their high school credential through free testing opportunities and in-person and remote classes. We are especially proud of our 2021 graduates who persevered during the pandemic and opened doors to their futures. Thousands of area adults have passed the GED® and gone on to college and better jobs where they can earn, on average, $9,000 more a year,” shared Director of TJACE @PVCC Carol Coffey.
Featured student speakers for the GED® graduation include Dareen Aloudeh, who successfully completed all levels of English as a Second Language (ESL) courses and then began her GED® classes. Aloudeh has also earned her Certified Nursing Aide license and works at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She is a current PVCC student taking prerequisite classes for transfer to a university and plans to become a doctor.
Hadya Faqirzai and Hannah Brown will also speak during the ceremony. Faqirzai earned her GED® and is continuing her education at PVCC. She has also completed a dental assisting class with Charlottesville Albemarle Technical Education Center. Brown is a PVCC student and has goals to obtain a four-year degree.
Currently, the state of Virginia is covering the cost of the GED® in each subject area when students enroll in an adult education program and meet eligibility requirements. To learn more about the registration process and all TJACE @PVCC programs, call 434-961-5461.
