PVCC Fine Arts and Performance Announces Lua Project Concert

The Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) Fine Arts and Performance division will host Lua Project, a band that blends Mexican and Appalachian music, to accompany the closing of The Mountain Traditions Project photography exhibition in the PVCC Gallery. The concert will take place Saturday, January 14, at 7:30 p.m., in the Main Stage Theatre, adjacent to the PVCC Gallery.

The Lua Project has been called a "cultural pollinator," bridging together musical styles from different continents and different centuries. Their original songs draw from the deeply held musical traditions of their own families' past. The music is inspired by Mexican Son, Appalachian song forms, Jewish and Eastern European tonalities, baroque melodic ideas, and Scotch-Irish narrative storytelling approaches.

The Lua Project's performance complements photographer and conservationist Michael O. Snyder’s The Mountain Traditions Project art exhibition in PVCC's North Gallery. The collection of photographs and oral histories documents individuals like those in Lua Project who are carrying forward deep-rooted traditions of the Appalachian region in a world which is otherwise rapidly changing. The images and stories explore the heritage of Appalachia as a rich and diverse tapestry that includes many voices, identities and perspectives.

TICKETS   Entry to The Mountain Traditions Project exhibition is free. Tickets for Lua Project are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and students. Patrons may purchase advance tickets online at www.pvcc.edu/performingarts or by calling 434.961.5376 (major credit cards accepted). The PVCC Cashier’s Office, located in the main building, has tickets available for purchase during normal business hours. If available, tickets may also be purchased starting two hours prior to the performance at the PVCC Box Office, located at the main entrance of the Dickinson Building.

The Main Stage Theatre and the PVCC Gallery are located in the V. Earl Dickinson Building at the south end of 501 College Drive. Ample free parking is available.
