Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) announces the first half of its upcoming 2022-2023 Fine Arts and Performance season. The diverse program features a host of events and activities for all ages with many returning favorites presenting music and dance concerts, open mic nights, movies, art exhibitions and more.
The season kicks off on the Main Stage, Friday, September 2, at 7:30 p.m., with the return of past winner of the International Juggling Championship Mark Nizer, whose “4D” show involves spinning laser beams, glowing orbs that make music and extraordinary feats of juggling–all enhanced by 3D technology. Nizer’s penchant for jokes and audience-involved antics have consistently delighted audiences at PVCC. He has also shared his exploits on notable stages such as The Kennedy Center, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, The Improv, MTV, Walt Disney World, Comic Strip Live, and HBO’s "Just for Laughs." Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
Several popular series are back on the schedule. The “One Mic Stand” spoken word open mic night returns with comedy promoter and filmmaker Ty Cooper hosting the program. Bimonthly performances in the series begin Thursday, September 8, at 7 p.m., offering a platform for spoken word artists and up-and-comers to share their poetry, comedy, satire, or storytelling.
Free Movie Friday, which features popular and critically acclaimed movies shown on the big screen, has its first show of the season Friday, September 16, at 7:30 p.m. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is a zany comedy/adventure/science fiction film that spans parallel universes as the story of a struggling laundromat owner who is being audited by the IRS unfolds.
Other events to round out the fall lineup include:
- The Latin Ballet of Virginia on Saturday, October 15, at 7:30 p.m., performing their original work “Alma Latina” in an energetic celebration of Hispanic culture with live music, dance, richly detailed costuming, and multi-media experiences.
- Master percussionist Tom Teasley, who returns for a two-day residency that includes a concert with violinist Stephen Nachmanovitch on Saturday, October 29, at 7:30 p.m., followed by a concert of spooky live accompaniment for a screening of the Dracula-inspired silent classic film Nosferatu on Sunday, October 30, at 2:30 p.m.
- Let There Be Light, PVCC’s annual outdoor exhibition of light-based art continues its new format of “Two nights! Two sites!” The PVCC campus will host the exhibition Friday, December 9, then the exhibition moves to walkable locations around downtown Charlottesville for Saturday, December 10. The lights will shine each night from 6 to 9 p.m.
The PVCC Art Department will show exhibitions in the PVCC Gallery, each one opening with a catered reception. On Friday, September 23, from 6 to 9 p.m., the Annual Faculty Exhibition and a retrospective of works from PVCC’s “The Fall Line” literary magazine opens and will run through Wednesday, November 9.
A collaboration with photographer Michael O. Snyder brings “The Mountain Traditions Project,” a documentary photography collection on loan from Maryland’s Frostburg State University. The exhibition tells the visual stories of individuals who are carrying forward Appalachian traditions in a rapidly changing world. Snyder will also curate an exhibition titled, “Our Changing Climate: A Visual Chronicle,” with the opening for both shows set for Friday, October 14, from 6 to 9 p.m.
All events, other than Saturday night’s Let There Be Light exhibition, will take place in the V. Earl Dickinson Building, located at the south end of 501 College Drive on the PVCC Main Campus.

Many of the PVCC Fine Arts and Performance season events are free. When tickets are required, patrons are encouraged to purchase advance tickets online at www.pvcc.edu/performingarts or by calling the PVCC Box Office at 434.961.5376 (major credit cards accepted). The PVCC Cashier’s Office, located in the Main Building, will also have tickets available for purchase during normal business hours. Tickets may also be purchased starting two hours prior to the performance at the PVCC Box Office if still available.
