The Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) Division of Humanities, Fine Arts and Social Sciences will present a second rendition of a performance-based presentation of creative writings by PVCC students who are incarcerated. “Flying in Place: Liberating Voices from Virginia’s Prisons” once again gathers a group of interpretative movement practitioners to bring to life the manuscripts, poems and essays of participants in the PVCC Higher Education in Prison program while the works are read aloud.
Three free performances will take place Friday, December 2, and Saturday, December 3, each evening at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee performance Sunday, December 4, at 2:30 p.m. Events will take place in the V. Earl Dickinson building Main Stage Theatre.
"Flying in Place” was first conceived of and presented in the spring of 2022, as a multi-disciplinary project that sought to lift the voices of incarcerated students who attend college-level classes to hone their writing skills. The goal was not just to showcase the student’s work, but also to invite the community to witness and understand more about persons who are incarcerated through their own words.
Associate Professor of Theatre Arts Brad Stoller will continue to spearhead the interpretative component in this next presentation, gathering a cast of roughly 16 PVCC students and community members from all walks of life to perform. Original music recorded for the performance will be provided by LaTasha Strother with other pre-recorded accompaniment by master percussionist Tom Teasley. The result is a physical theatre voyage set to music that vividly interprets the student’s writings as a narrator reads, with movements prompted by words in the text.
